Sustainable Transportation: Impact on the Environment
For several years, our planet has suffered the consequences of climate change and global warming. One of the tools that can help deal with these phenomena is sustainable transportation because it reduces CO2 emissions.
Sustainable transportation aims at people, animals, and goods mobility causing the least possible impact on the environment.
Among the sustainable alternatives, we find the electric car, which can be recharged with 100% renewable energy. This power source transition allows for the reduction of energy consumption and pollution.
According to the World Bank, the shift towards sustainable mobility could lead to savings of USD70 trillion by 2050. This is possible taking into account the costs of transportation and fuel, operational expenses, and losses due to traffic congestion.
Classification of Sustainable Transportation
For this classification, two main factors are taken into account: the size of the vehicle and the number of passengers it can hold.
On the one hand, large-scale sustainable transportation seeks to mobilize a greater number of passengers using large vehicles. On the other hand, small-scale sustainable transportation aims at mobilizing one or a few people.
In each classification, we can find different types of vehicles, but all of them use clean energy for their operation. Some examples are:
– Large-scale sustainable transportation: in this group we can find airplanes powered by solar energy and electric public transportation such as buses and trains.
– Small-scale sustainable transportation: ideal transportation alternatives are grouped here for you to start your journey to sustainable mobility. There are options such as electric bikes, electric scooters and skateboards, electric or hybrid cars, hoverboards, and segways.
Clean Technologies and Sustainable Transportation, the Ideal combination
Green technologies seek to create goods and services that contribute to the conservation of the ecosystem.
These clean technologies are an engine to implement the sustainable transportation trend. For example, thanks to advances in electric mobility, environmentally friendly travel alternatives have been consolidated.
Sustainable Transportation: Contributions to the Environment
What are the contributions of sustainable transportation to the environment? We prepared this list so that you can always remember the benefits of green mobility:
• It reduces the tons of waste generated in industrial processes.
• It diminishes greenhouse gas emissions by using alternative sources for energy production.
• It strengthens public health by minimizing air pollution.
• It is a great contribution to the stabilization of the planet´s temperature.
• It helps noise pollution to remain at acceptable levels.
Sustainable Transportation: Implementation Worldwide
According to Wuppertal Institute’s sustainable mobility ranking, the European cities best adapted to this trend are Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Oslo, Zurich, Vienna, and Madrid.
Copenhagen has more than 350 km of bike lanes. In addition, it is working towards a future where no public vehicles emit CO2 and it has promoted sustainable construction initiatives.
Amsterdam has implemented the Clean Air 2025 program. This policy aims to reduce CO2 emissions from private vehicles and public transportation.
Moreover, Greenpeace highlights the following cities in Spain with sustainable transport: Bilbao, Valencia, Barcelona, Seville, and Madrid.
The first three cities have been betted for the reduction of private vehicles. Some of the strategies that have been implemented are widening the sidewalks, restricting unnecessary traffic, and increasing the use of bicycles.
In the case of Madrid, the city continues to promote the use of electric cars through the increase in charging stations. This is one of the most important aspects to promote electric mobility. Since September 2020, the Spanish company Iberdrola has been accelerating the implementation of its sustainable mobility plan.
This company continues with its plan to install 150,000 charging stations on public roads, in businesses, and in homes in the next five years. In this way, Spain will continue to become an increasingly environmentally friendly country. Do you still have doubts about the advantages of sustainable transportation? The implementation of clean mobility, both individually and on a larger scale, is one of the best options to reduce our carbon footprint. Let´s go green!
